Supermarkets against food waste
Supermarkets in the Netherlands increasingly engage in the fight against avoidable food waste (voedselverspilling). Not only do they offer substantial discounts on products close to their best-before date to prevent their disposal (left picture), but also encourage customers to prepare a meal from food leftovers at home (right picture). However, the successful prevention of food waste in the private sector is also met with criticism from food aid organisations whose supplies depend heavily on the groceries that large retailers clear from their shelves.
